ICHC Men’s 3s Captain

In April, I was voted in by my team to be Captain of the Imperial College Hockey Club Men’s 3s. Starting at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, I’ve run training sessions once a week for the 3s, focusing on improving skills and gameplay across the team. Every week, we play in two leagues. I have to select that weeks squad and then organise the players on and off the field to give us the best chance of winning. If we can top our league this year it will be the third year in a row that we’ve done it - so the pressure is on.

As both a Captain and a goalkeeper, I have to have excellent communication, decision making and leadership skills on and off the pitch. I need to be able to perceive attacking threats and organise the defence quickly and correctly, with conditions often changing as fast as I can give commands. I was once told that ‘being a keeper is just continuous problem solving - not thinking fast enough can cost you the game’. Having to deal with high pressured situations, which demand a clear head and concise communication is why I love keeping so much.
